• "Social Entitlements in European Constitutions". One of the notable characteristics of the proposed Constitution for the European Union was the inclusion, in Part II, of a list of "social rights" (employment protection, unemployment compensation, medical and retirement insurance...). Though these features may be desirable in their own right, their constitutionalization would be likely to slow down efforts at reform already underway in the Union. [pdf]

• In Globalization and its Discontents (translated into French as La Grande Désillusion, Fayard 2002), Joseph Stiglitz adds his voice to the growing chorus of globalization's critics. His analysis is noteworthy for being that of an insider, a former chairman of President Clintons Council of Economic Advisors, and a former Vice President of the World Bank. Though he indulges in vicious personal attacks, for which he himself has been roundly criticized, the substance of his arguments calls for rebuttal.
